Analysis Assignment of “The Professional Photographer: his work – his tools.”
Write a short essay that analyzes one of the posters (“The Professional Photographer: his work – his tools.” Exhibition poster, Basel, 1938.). You should base you analysis on the principles, theories, and/or methods outlined in one of the assigned readings listed below, and draw direct evidence from that reading in support of your analysis. [Moholy-Nagy, “Typophoto” (Graphic Design Theory) ]. Consider how the work you are analyzing reflects, conforms to, challenges, and/or adopts the views expressed in the reading you choose. You may choose to discuss a work that is historically and geographically germane to the reading (ie. a Constructivist poster according to Constructivist theories), or you may choose to analyze ‘against the grain,’ so to speak. Your analysis should work towards developing and supporting a specific analytical thesis that makes an argument about the relation between the graphic work and the theoretic reading. In your analysis, make sure to describe the elements of the work that you are analyzing, explain how these elements function individually and as a whole in light of the reading, and how they contribute to the analytical argument you are making about the work. When citing the reading, please use Chicago citation style. The only source you need to use are the GRAPHOC DESIGN A CONCISE HISTORY-Richard Hollis, and TYPOPHOTO- Moholy Nagy.
