The massacre at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota on December 29, 1890, provides the backdrop for the narrative. What were the attitudes that different groups of Europeans had toward the natives they encountered in America? And how do the Indian Nations reacted to this encounter? Give 3 (three) examples of European views towards Native Americans, and provide 3 (three) examples of how did Native Nations reacted to the arrival of Europeans in their territories, or to the arrival of the U.S. government (or its military).
The majority of the chapters in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee are a survey of the Western Nations like the Navajo, Santee Sioux, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Apache, Crow, Cochise, Nez Perces, the Oglala Sioux, the Ute, and the Madoc. Choose one (1) of these Nations and explain their society at the time of European contact.
Choose 2 (two) of these Nations and compare and contrast what happened to them after the Europeans arrived in their territories. Please be organized in your comparisons, Make an outline first so that you can be organized. Submit this outline at the end of your paper (attachment A).
Some Nations experienced special leaders and prophets in times of rapid cultural changes that preached or labored to return to the old ways, or who tried to accommodate to the new settlers of European origin. Explain the Ghost Dance initiated by a Paiute Indian, and how and why did this ritual extended through all of the Plains and beyond. What is the cultural significance of the Ghost Dance? Why does it persist until present? What is its relation to Wounded Knee?
The author declares that the reader will not finish the book with a cheerful spirit but will come away with a better understanding of what the American Indian is and was. In what ways does the book provide a new understanding of what the American Indian is and was? Provide 3 examples and explain them.
