Critical Written Analysis of Public Space
In this assignment, the students will analyse Urban Design Character of a public space of their choice.This space can be streetscape, public open space or plaza in their neighbourhood. Or it could be another place they may be familiar with. ('Broken Hill', NSW, Australia)
The students with photographs (USE FIVE (5) ONLY), sketches and words will analyse the character of the place. The character of a place is studied by analysing locally distinctive patterns of development, landscape and culture. Utilizing the framework put forward by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment in Urban Design and the Planning Toolkit, the students will carry out an appraisal including the following assessments:
1. memories and associations, local traditions and cultural diversity;
2.the origins and development of the topography of the area, including surviving elements of historic street patterns, plot subdivisions, boundary treatments and the relationships between buildings and, spaces;
3. the archaeological significance and potential of the area;
4.the architecture and historic quality, character and coherence of buildings, both listed and unlisted, and the contribution they make to the special interest of the area;
5. the character and hierarchy of spaces and their townscape quality;
6. prevalent and historic building materials;
7.the contribution made to the character of the area by green spaces, trees, hedges and other
cultivated elements;
8. the area's prevailing (or former) uses, plan forms and building types;
9.the relationship of the built environment to landscape or open countryside, including significant landmarks, vistas and panoramas;
10. features which have been lost, or which intrude on or detract from the character of the area.
