DACA's Pilgrimage
It is March 2018 and protections for DACA recipients have begun to expire.
As a key strategist and communications director for a major immigrants’ rights group, who has been tasked with drawing up a response strategy for the next year to be presented at a major meeting. What combination of political tactics will you deploy in order to draw attention to the struggles of DACA recipients and undocumented immigrants more generally in the intensifying stalemate over immigration law? (e.g., mass demonstrations, civil disobedience, social media campaigns, public media appearances, private negotiations with Democrat and Republican legislators, public pressure on Congress). What are the goals of your strategy? (e.g. Moderate Republicans turn on Trump and vote to protect DACA without other immigration restrictions attached to the bill, Democrats take back Congress in midterm elections, broader cultural change in US attitudes toward immigrants, defeat of President Trump, eventual path to citizenship for all undocumented) What kind of slogans or images will your movement use? Will your goal be to persuade those who are without a strong opinion on the issue, rally your base or both?
And what do you expect the reaction of the Trump administration to your movement to be—how will your respond?
Please do not feel you must respond to each of these many strategic issues but take on at least three.
