Make sure that at least one of the souses or more is scholarly source. and popular as well. you need to write examples in the proposal specially you HAVE to include Walter White ( Character in Breaking Bad TV show) as example too. Please use simple and easy words. If you have further questions please ask accordingly. FINAL PROJECT: Drug Crimes Proposal/Pecha Kucha Presentation Purpose: Throughout this semester, we have discussed many issues related to the American prison system. We have investigated problems with race, class, gender, and sentencing issues. One of the largest populations we have in our prisons now is drug offenders. In an effort to not only be critics of our system but activists as well, you will be making an argument for a PROPOSED CHANGE in the system regarding these offenders. Assignment: You will need to select two other classmates to work with on this project. For this assignment, you’ll be constructing an argument that proposes a “fair” punishment for drug crimes offenders and/or alternative options for rehabilitation. You will need to do extensive research into drug crime research and rehabilitation, and, as a group, propose a new method of sentencing for these offenders. Additionally, if you choose, you may propose services for these offenders in prison such as education, job training, etc. Be sure to follow the directions of how to write a proposal in the chapter we read/discuss in class. It is very important that you begin by defining the exact type of drug offender you are making the proposal for and then explain the current laws and sentences for this crime. It may be easier to limit your proposal to a specific state rather than for the entire country. For the purposes of this assignment, money is not an obstacle. With your group, you’ll create a Pecha Kucha (20 slides and 6 minutes and 40 seconds to speak). This presentation will be “live,” meaning it will be presented in class without previously recording the material. Since three of you will be working together, that means that each partner is responsible for roughly a third the material and presentation. Be sure, however, that the Pecha Kucha is INTEGRATED, meaning that one partner should not present 7 slides in a row with all of his/her seconds of speaking. Rotate between the three members—at the most, one person can present two slides back to back. At the end of your Pecha Kucha, a works cited must appear as the final slide (slide #21) for any images that you did not personally take. Failure to cite these images is plagiarism and could result in a failing grade for this project. Be sure to follow all the steps of this paper outlined for you in the chapter on Isidore Resources. Rules: Your proposal cannot break any existing laws. For example, “Law enforcement should shoot anyone found guilty of a drug crime on the spot.” No way! Additionally, Walter White needs to be used somewhere in the presentation. How you decide to work him in is up to you. Research: Research is required for this project as both popular and scholarly sources will be used. Your group must use at least 3 sources, 1 of which must be scholarly. Some topics you might consider researching for the scholarly sources are: sentences that are very lengthy for drug crimes, services that can help to rehabilitate drug crime offenders, release and housing issues for offenders once they are released, issues with the life-time label of drug offender, issues of treatment while incarcerated, mental health issues, probation issues, etc. Audience: This is important for this project! Remember, the goal of an argument/proposal is to persuade your audience. You are presenting your Pecha Kucha to a review board of American judges who have the ability to change the way drug crime offenders are sentenced. Your peers will serve as the group of American judges. Grading: Each person will be graded for his/her own portion of the Pecha Kucha and the group will be graded on the presentation. Every member of the group is required to turn in his/her own written “script” and research used. It must follow the proposal format. This project will be worth 100 points. The point breakdown is located on the project rubrics. What you will turn in to me: Each group member is required to submit to me on the day of the presentation a typed “script” that you use for each of your slides along with a work cited for the research you used in your slides. Additionally, each group member must submit a 1 page writer’s memo in which you explain to me what you were responsible for in this project and how well you think the group worked together. NOTE: I will take into account your group members’ comments on your work and participation as I determine your grade. It is imperative that every group member do his/her share of the work. Due Dates: Fri Dec 4: 20 images due in class and basic outline of proposal (10 points) Dec 9 and 11: Scripts due, writer’s memo, and class presentations. Helpful hints: *As a group, you all need to be clear on the different types of drug crimes. Research this and talk through this as a group. Then discuss the current sentencing. What do you think about it is fair? What isn’t? What needs to change in order to make it fair and why? *Read the chapter VERY CAREFULLY on how to make a solid proposal. Then, divide the proposal into sections and assign a specific group member to do that work. I cannot stress the importance of this enough. *Practice, practice, practice your part of the Pecha Kucha. Timing is everything!!!! Question: What should we do if one of our group members isn’t doing his/her share of the work? Answer: Speak to the group member about your concerns. If it doesn’t change, come to see me. Be sure to document it in your writer’s memo.
