• Characteristics of nonverbal communication: Clearly identifies the difference between verbal and nonverbal communication and the benefits and functions of nonverbal communication.
• Influences on nonverbal communication: Describes ways in which gender and culture affect the way we express and interpret nonverbal cues.
• Types of nonverbal communication: Explains the multiple ways we communicate nonverbally and how best to manage our nonverbal cues. This ties back to impression management in chapter 3.

Please Respond To The Following:
1. Using at least two of the types of nonverbal communication described in your text, and referring to your own experience, describe an incident that illustrates how nonverbal behavior can be ambiguous. How could you or the other person involved have reduced the ambiguity of that situation?
2. One characteristic of nonverbal communication is that it serves many functions. Explain the functions of substituting, accenting, and regulating using specific examples.Chapter 7 explains that nonverbal communication serves many functions, including substituting, accenting, regulating, and contradicting. Identify examples of each function in one or both of the scenarios.
2. Describe specific ways in which Kim's nonverbal behavior differs in each version of the scenario. Pay attention to her body orientation, posture, gestures, facial expression, and paralanguage.
3. Chapter 7 explains that nonverbal communication is ambiguous. Identify nonverbal behaviors of Kim (in each version of the scenario) that could be interpreted in more than one way.
4. If you could change one thing about how you communicate paralinguistically (rate, pitch, tone, volume, pauses, and vocal interrupters), what would it be?
