Eine Kleine - Minuet
Order Description
The Minuet is a lively dance movement in triple meter. It is a binary form. Each of its sections is eight bars in length, and each section is repeated.
There is not a clear cadence until the last measure of the first section. The piece is in G major. What kind of cadence do we hear in m. 8? How informative is reading the bass line in determining the cadence? Can you recognize the cadence by hearing it? Is there a natural division of the eight-bar phrase into two four-bar subphrases, almost suggesting two four-bar phrases? What is the principal harmony we hear in m. 4? Which measures in this first section are similar to each other? The viola is normally written in a C clef (known as the Alto clef), which harks back to C clef used in the medieval notation in the Liber Usualis. Compare the notes played by the viola in m. 1-3 with those played by the cello. What do you see? In measures 6 and 7, the rhythmic figures in the violins suggest three groups of two beats across two measures of 3/4. What is a hemiola? (Research your answer.) Is this a hemiola?
Additionally, describe the music's effect on you as listener.
