The story revolves around Gregor and the tribulation of his family. All of these happen after he one day wakes up to find that he has turned into a giant insect (Kafka 2). Life begins to change for the worst for all the family members. Gregor has to learn to live like a cockroach; eating filth and climbing walls. His family has to start living a dilapidated life because he had been their breadwinner but is no longer able to provide. They also have to live with the reality that one of their family members is now an insect. The distress of the family causes Gregor a lot of anguish, coupled with his inability to adjust to his new status. Eventually, due to injuries and despair, he dies. After his death, the life of his family again seems to start getting better. One of the most prominent themes in the story is freedom.
The first person that experiences this freedom is Gregor himself. That happens after he wakes up one day and finds that he is a large cockroach. In his previous status, he had a lot of stress. He was the only person who was expected to provide for his family (Kafka 3). His boss also put him under so much pressure to perform, that the day he fails to show up at work on time, he comes looking for Gregor at his house. Al of these goes away in his new status. Al he has to do is lay in his room all day, crawl up walls and wait to be fed by his family.
His freedom also comes through his death. He faces a lot of anguish as a cockroach. He has to live with the fact that as an insect, he is no longer capable of taking care of his family. He thus has to go through the pain of seeing his family increasingly suffer. His death also causes freedom to his family. His sister has been distressing because she has to bear feeding her brother filth on a daily basis and cleaning after him. The family also does not have to hide him behind closed doors. At one point, the sight of him sends away people who had been brought to help with the settlement of the rent.
Once he dies, his family feels free to pursue the rest of their lives. The author mentions that the health of Grete begins to come back, and her beauty can be seen again. His father now affords to provide for his family without having to depend on Gregor. When he turned into a cockroach, his family has been able to keep a considerable amount of money as savings. With this money, the family manages to move into a bigger and better apartment and forget the pain, suffering and bad memories that they had to endure in the other house.
Their lives also get better in other areas. For instance, they send away the people they had taken in to help in payment of the rent since they are now able to afford the whole amount. They also manage to get rid of their filthy old maid. The maid had been hired specifically because of Gregor. She was the only one who did not seem to mind the filth that Gregor has been subjected to in his new form.
