Assessment 1: Descriptive Exercise

Purpose & Objectives
The purpose of this exercise is for you to focus on description as an important skill required for film historical research and its communication.
As a skills-focused exercise, you are not required to do any research of the scholarly literature for this exercise.
Though you may like to do some background research, you are strongly encouraged NOT to do any but rather to respond to the assignment in its own terms and constraints.
INSTRUCTIONS
The assignment is divided into three sections.
Section A (200 words)
Select ONE of the three brief film clips in the folder ‘Assessment 1 Section A film clips’ and describe its formal (audio and visual) elements.

Section B (200 words)
Select ONE of the archival objects in the folder ‘Assessment 1 Section B materials’ and describe it (its form, design and other visual elements such as composition, etc).
I will submit the picture later (which named as Section B)
Section C (100 words)
Reflect briefly on what further research or background knowledge would enrich one or both of your descriptions.

Marking criteria
1. Describes salient aspects of the archival object;
2. Avoids analysis;
3. Uses clear prose, and a rich and varied vocabulary appropriate to the archival
object;
4. Reflects perceptively on further research and background information that would
enrich one or both descriptions.
