submit a response to only ONE of the following questions
1. Discuss how the films AKA Donus OR Kelly Loves Tony (only choose one of Nakasak’s documentaries) AND Better Luck Tomorrow depict and even challenge the stereotypes of the Asian American model minority. You must also reference ideas from one of the following critical readings: Jun Okada’s chapter 5 (on BLT) OR Viet Le’s “What Remains.”
2. In the films Terminal USA and Saving Face the Asian American family is reconceived from its traditional and heteronormative standard. Discuss the value of showing Asian American families as queered (i.e., as not the model minority, traditional, and heterosexual) and how this forces us to rethink family, racial identity, and culture. You must talk about both films and use one of the following critical readings: Jun Okada’s chapter 3 OR Audrey Yeh’s “Queer Asian American Cinema and Film” OR Kenneth Chan’s “Rice Sticking Together. . . “ (the last two essays are in the folder for Saving Face).
