Formal analysis:

Choose ***ONE***of the artworks from the following: 1 Raphael's Philosophy (School of Athens) Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican Palace, Rome, Italy 1509-1511 2 Pablo Picasso's Guernica 1937 3 Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry (North Wall) 1932-1933 fresco In order to write a well-developed and thoughtful paper, you should spend time looking at the artworks and thinking out your response. Seriously, spend some time looking at it and take notes! You will need to organize your thoughts and the paper as a whole, so an outline would be a great place to start. • The short introduction should begin by identifying your choice by title, artist, date/s and should end by objectively describing the subject matter. • The second part, the bulk of your paper should be a formal analysis of the artworks. Here, use appropriate terminology from the textbook. Pay special attention to organization: order the topics logically and use appropriate transitions. Paragraph appropriately and use topic sentences. Most importantly, show your visual literacy by clearly explaining how the terminology applies to the artworks with specific examples: “In the Mona Lisa by Leonardo, the distance of the mountains in the background is emphasized through the haziness of the atmosphere, or, atmospheric perspective.” Begin with line and cover all of the elements of art. Then, move on to the principles of design, such as balance, etc. Be sure to analyze your artwork using all elements and principles of art!! Not sure what these are? There is a tutorial at http://thevirtualinstructor.com/fundamentals.html This paper should be a minimum of 1,000 words. This does not mean that you should abruptly stop when you hit 1001 words – this a minimum. Students who earn 90 – 100% on this paper generally write 2000 words. You should use Times New Roman, size 12, double spaced, with one inch margins. After the last sentence in your paper, type the number of words used. Following is an outline to help organize your paper. However, you should submit your paper in a traditional format. Do not submit your paper in an outline form. Create a title page for your paper (include a title, your name, the name of the course, and my name). Upload your paper to the dropbox on Blackboard, in the Formal Analysis folder. Do not email me a copy of your paper unless you perceive that there is a problem. I cannot keep track of these papers emailed to me – I grade them through Blackboard. Also, upload a .doc file! Do not use .rtf, .odt, or .zip - use Google to figure out how to export your file if you're not using Microsoft Word! Not following these instructions may result in a delay in the grading of your paper. Plagiarism: Make sure that you are citing your only source, the textbook! Use direct quotes if you are quoting material exactly. Paraphrasing is considered plagiarism. If you’re stating information that is not considered “general knowledge” then it should be cited. Blackboard will check your paper against past papers as well as online sources and reference materials and provides a report as to the integrity of your paper. Your syllabus contains information about academic integrity and the fact that all papers must be submitted via Blackboard.
