Discuss at least ONE of the following questions. In addition, reply to your colleagues’ posts addressing different questions than the one you answered.
1. Renaissance figures (ca., 15th-16th centuries) first used the “Middle Ages” (also known as the "Dark Ages") to criticize what they saw as a sterile age in which government had degenerated into feudal anarchy, religion into superstition, and scholarship into pedantic quibbles of schoolmen over texts. Would Eileen Powers agree? Why? In contrast, other scholars assert that the period was one of innovation, change, and possibility, including in technology. Which view is more accurate and why? Think about these contrasting interpretations and consider if, or how much, the Middle Ages was sterile period, merely passing on diluted versions of the heritage of antiquity, and the extent to which it contributed new and vital elements to the European tradition.
2. What is scholasticism? Explain its origin in the medieval universities in Europe and its approach to knowledge and learning. Note famous "scholastics" and their writings, discoveries, or why they are important. Discuss the nature of the Medieval university and the ways in which its structure influenced the reception of Aristotelianism in the Latin West.
3. What happens to learning and knowledge in the period 400 to 1000 in Western Europe? Explain, citing specific events and both the loss and re-discovery or discovery of technology, learning, skills, knowledge, and technology? Discuss. Note both the “barbarian” invasions and the rise of Islam. What happened and what were the intellectual bases of this post-Roman order? Explain, citing education and theology.
