Hybrid & Battery Technology Problem Statement

For a hybrid system consists of a 400 kW Wind with 50 meter hub height, 20 kW PV array with 24 kWh/year Battery system, and a 220 kVA Diesel Generator. Find the optimum combination of these sources of energy given the following constraints. Diesel generator operates 742 hours per year and the fixed cost of diesel generator operation is $86/Hour. The cost of energy from grid is $0.47/kWh. The grid buys back the power from your design at $0.25/kWh. The monthly wind speed and solar (clearness index and daily radiation) is shown in Table 1. Table 1: Wind and Solar Resource Month Wind Speed (m/s) Clearness Index Daily Radiation (kWh/m2/d) January 7.503 0.481 3.929 February 7.521 0.519 4.681 March 7.043 0.522 5.192 April 6.518 0.518 5.472 May 6.474 0.504 5.402 June 5.490 0.482 5.144 July 4.923 0.500 5.333 August 5.001 0.499 5.266 September 4.945 0.488 4.932 October 4.867 0.493 4.563 November 6.903 0.486 4.045 December 7.432 0.506 3.977 Average 6.218 0.500 4.828 • Wind turbine cost is about $1.70/W • Solar Panel Cost including battery system is $3/W Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), also known as Green tags, Renewable Energy Credits, Renewable Electricity Certificates, or Tradable Renewable Certificates (TRCs), are tradable, non-tangible energy commodities in the United States that represent proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource (renewable electricity) and was fed into the shared system of power lines which transport energy. Solar renewable energy certificates (SRECs) are RECs that are specifically generated by solar energy Renewable Energy Certificates provide a mechanism for the purchase of renewable energy that is added to and pulled from the electrical grid. RECs for Wind Energy and SRECs for Solar Energy are traded at $150 each. Task to be done: • Find the optimum solution for the above configuration and provide the economic as well as environmental impact of the design. • Calculate the Payback time using 5% interest rate and 5 year duration for renewable energy credit.
