Intercultural Communication
Gradually, the modern world becomes more and more globalized. One of the peculiar features of globalization is the interaction of separate individuals and certain civilizations. The relations between different nations become very significant. As a matter of fact, the international relations are based on intercultural communication. Only after reaching a consensus, the mankind can solve global problems and protect itself against self-destruction.
Intercultural communication as a special kind of intercourse presupposes interaction between speakers of different languages and different cultures. In fact, the comparison of languages and cultures reveals not only the common and universal, but also some specific, national, original characteristics resulted from the differences in the history of the nations. Moreover, intercultural communication, while speaking a foreign language, deals with understanding and being understood at the same time.
As a matter of fact, intercultural communication can be done via two basic types of intercourse: verbal and nonverbal. Indeed, verbal communication is carried out by using a language both orally and in writing. Under these conditions, the important role in the communication is played by the social norms of the language use, the variety of its styles, principles of lexical units and verbal behavior, social relations, values and beliefs, worldview, customs, rituals, etc.
The most common example of intercultural communication and cultural collision is the real intercourse with foreigners in their country, or at home. Such situations generate a lot of curiosities, funny stories, troubles, dramas, and even tragedies.
For instance, in Latin America, the advertising of “Marlboro” cigarettes is not effective, because in this culture a cowboy means a representative of the poorest; therefore, people associate this advertisement with smoking the cheapest and the worst cigarettes.
Consequently, intercultural communication has become a vital requirement for efficient and proper co-existence of many different nations. Intercultural communication can not only prevent minor conflicts on the individual level, but also significant cultural conflicts between countries, religions, and ethnic groups, which, in the worst scenario, can result in rebellions and wars.
