Is contemporary Western policy towards the Middle East ‘neo-Orientalist’? Critically discuss on the basis of one specific example.
You should answer one of the below essay questions, which require you to relate a post- or decolonial approach, theory or concept that has been discussed in class and used in one of the core readings (such as ‘Orientalism’, ‘post-development’, ‘subaltern’, or more broadly the work of Said, Escobar or Spivak, or any other post- or decolonial theorist) to a practical example/case-study of your choice. For the case-study/example, you can either use cases discussed in the module (such as the War on Terror, or FGM), or come up with a case-study yourself. This assignment helps you to make the central link between theory and practice. You are invited to attend essay clinics in week 10 in which the module leader will discuss your case-study and an outline of your essay. All essays are expected to advance a particular position or argument and are expected to critically engage with the ideas, arguments and counter-arguments put forth by a minimum of 5 scholarly sources, which are either taken from the module reading lists or may be found independently. Please note that you are expected to outline your case-study in quite some detail. It is not enough to make cursory, general comments about e.g. ‘the War on Terror’ – it has to be about a specific place, event, uprising, policy, etc (e.g. the Arab Uprising in Tunisia). You are not required to cite scholarly sources for your case-study, but you can if you want to. It is fine to use credible, high-quality websites for giving information on your case (e.g. the BBC website). It is then your task to establish the link between your case, and the postcolonial approach, theory or concept you are using (in other words, you don’t have to find scholarly sources that do exactly that). The case-study can either be used to prove the utility of the concept/approach/theory/scholar used, or to point out the latter’s problems and inadequacies. Essay questions: 1.
