Issues confronting the police
Fighting police corruption has been a difficult job for some departments across the nation. The Los Angeles Police Department had a number of problems in the late 1980s and 1990s that started
with the 1992 riots after the acquittals of the police officers involved in the beating of Rodney King and culminated with the Rampart scandal in the late 1990s. In the early 2000s, a new police
chief for Los Angeles, William Bratton, was brought into the department to help remedy the situation. Students need to watch the video, Peter Jennings Reporting—LAPD (here is one of the many links
available http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/peter_jennings_reporting_lapd), about the LAPD in the aftermath of the problems.
provide a short summary of the video in the first 1.5-2 pages. In the next 1.5-2 pages, explain the issues that the LAPD was facing during the time of the video and the ways the police are
trying to improve.
