Letter to your government representative urging action on the issue of climate change
1. Look up one of your representatives:
Find their mailing address and determine their political party.
(Hoffman tells us political party is important for how we think about climate change.) a. https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative
b. https://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm
c. Or you can write the President, if you’re feeling bold.
2. Compose a persuasive letter to this legislator urging action on the climate change issue. Your letter should be about 500-750 words not counting your annotations or references. Your letter must include the following elements:
a. A statement of the issue – highlight this in GREEN.
b. At least two pieces of scientific evidence about climate change – highlight these in
YELLOW.
c. An explanation of what type of action you want the legislator to take on the issue and why
you think this is what is needed – highlight this in BLUE.
3. Finally, you should provide at least four annotations in your letter using the footnote function. In
each of these annotations, you will explain how the choices you made in that part of the letter were influenced by the readings from our climate change unit. For example, how did the Hoffman or Thaler and Sunstein readings influence that language you used, the sources you drew on, or the kinds of action you encouraged the person to take? KEEP IN MIND: These are not “citations” for WHAT you said but instead are justifications for HOW you said it.
