In a response paper, you are to engage with the main themes and ideas presented by an author/director. This is a personal response; so you can use first person in the paper to express your opinions/reactions. This is not a summary of the entire film. Limit any summary to the first two paragraphs of the paper. This is also not a review of the thumbs up/thumbs down sort. Do not simply tell me if you liked or disliked the film. This should be an exploration of some of the main themes of the film and how these themes are presented. You can critically respond to the content of the film or its presentation style.
First, you should outline what you think the purpose of the film is and what the main themes are. Second, consider how you can personally relate to the ideas presented in the film. What did you find most interesting? Did the film make you reflect on past experiences? Did the film change or reaffirm your thinking in any way? Pick one or two concepts/reactions to create a thesis about the film and your reaction to it. (Ex. "Life and Debt" made me rethink my view of tourism. Whereas before I thought tourism could be a good way for people from different cultures to learn about each other, I now think ...) Finally, you may critique the way the film presented its underlying argument by considering what you thought was effective or how the film could have been improved.
Structure of Response Essay
Length two pages double spaced, 12 pt font, 1 inch margins. Around 1000 words.
Introduction: Be sure to give the film's title and director and the main purpose of the film. The last sentence of the introduction should be the thesis statement.
Body: Discussion of your response. Again do not simply summarize. But do refer to scenes and ideas from the film and connect them to your own thinking. This should be organized into paragraphs.
Conclusion: Sum up your thesis. Consider the value of this film and who might be interested in watching it.
