Local Regulatory Environment
The state and federal governments have agencies that provide guidance for compliance to regulations and complete inspections to ensure that organizations are compliant with their industry specific codes of conduct. For example, in the health care industry, the Department of Health will inspect infectious and hazard waste disposal, the FDA will inspect drug disposal, the EPA will inspect the use of isotopes, and OSHA inspects employees' exposure to radiation and other health hazards. This discussion provides an opportunity to examine your own industry and the regulations and governmental agencies with which you may interact. Complete the following:
• Identify the governmental agencies that inspect and provide guidance for compliance to regulations and standards for your industry.
• Describe what your organization must do to ensure compliance with those regulations. This may include your responsibility to ensure your supplies meet guidelines if your organization does not manufacture all of the product components.
• Describe appropriate and inappropriate practices when interacting with surveyors from governmental agencies.
• If your organization is or was to become a governmental contractor, describe how that shapes those appropriate and inappropriate practices.
