Mental Health Care State Examination

  For this assignment you are required to demonstrate knowledge of how to perform a mental state examination (MSE) by producing a video tape recording of yourself acting as the interviewer in a 15 minute role-play with a person who has agreed to act as your client. Please note: You are not permitted to use a real client (either new or existing) from your private practice, public or private hospital or public or private agency for this assessment. You are also not allowed to use scripted notes, look at the MSE marking guide, or use pre-prepared interview notes of any kind for this assessment. It is important during the interview to: demonstrate clinical communication micro skills (i.e. attending, listening, questioning, reflection of feelings, empathy) structure your questioning to suit the style usually adopted when performing a mental state examination. structure your questioning to be able to make a diagnosis using some DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. administer the K10 standardised assessment tool. Please note: you are not expected to memorize the K10 and are allowed to refer to questions contained in the K10 document word for word during the interview. provide feedback on the outcome of the K10. perform a full risk assessment (suicide, homicide, legal and illegal substance abuse). discuss treatment options. summarize the findings from the assessment. make a referral during the interview (not compulsory).
