Multigenre Project

Description of Projects for READ 680 Multigenre Project Candidates will begin to explore a topic in their content area through this multi-genre research project. The intent of this project is for candidates to explore, through participation, an alternative to the traditional research paper or report. Candidates will use one place, person, or event in their content area (a math content teacher may wish to focus on a famous mathematician or a social studies person may want to focus on a little known explorer) as the subject of their multi-genre project. Students will be expected to consult at least 10 varied sources on the topic (i.e., research articles, documentaries, NPR broadcasts, PBS specials, visits to museums, brochures, facts from tour guides, Internet (reliable sources only) and to synthesize the information in a multi-genre report. REMEMBER, the purpose of this project is for you to explore and become an expert on a topic that you are required to teach in the future. Important things to keep in mind: THE PRODUCTS FOR THIS PROJECT ARE AT AN ADULT LEVEL, NOT AT A K-12 LEVEL THIS PROJECT IS IN LIEU OF A RESEARCH PAPER SO STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO CREATE EVERYTHING FOR AN ADULT AUDIENCE WITH ADULT PRODUCTS. Part I: Develop a Research Plan Answer the following questions as a way to formulate a plan for your research. 1) What is your topic? 2) Describe what you know about your topic. 3) Tell what you want to learn about. What information will you need to learn to become an EXPERT on this topic. 4) Describe the origins of your research. What sparked your interest in the topic? Why do you want to know more about it? 5) List at least a dozen questions you have about your topic. 6) Describe your plan for collecting information about your topic. 7) Provide a preliminary bibliography (or sources you will consult) Part II: Do Your Research You must consult at least ten different sources to find information on your topic. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA AS A SOURCE. CONSULT MORE THAN ONLINE SOURCES AND FOR THE ONLINE SOURCES YOU USE, YOU MUST BE SURE THAT THEY ARE ACCURATE SOURCES. Your sources can be primary or secondary. You may consult books, articles, credible Internet sites, experts, brochures, etc. I would encourage you to first consult the Internet and resource books before you begin collecting resources. It is also a good idea to keep your list of questions you want to know about this topic (see Part I) and journal where you record facts and ideas you have about your topic as you research it. I will not collect your research notes. Part III: What you turn in to the Professor Your Multigenre Project will consist of six parts: Your project will be submitted electronically in one file: -A Cover Page -A Table of contents (label the Group you are using (Ex: Group 1: Editorial) -An Introduction -The Five Genres (categories, products) -Closing -Sources Introduction Once you have explored your topic and have ample information on it, you are ready to begin writing. The format of the multi-genre paper is much different than a tradition research report; however, the content and details provided should be of the same caliber. -An introduction to the topic (minimum of two pages). This is background information and insight into the topic that you gained from consulting the ten different sources that you used. This part of the project is a synthesis of the research that you reviewed and the knowledge that you gained. Be sure that you have cited your sources in this part of your document. Introduce your audience (me) to the topic. Give me detailed background information. BE SURE TO WRITE FOR AN AUDIENCE (ME). MAKE YOUR WRITING INTERESTING AND TALK TO ME. THIS IS GRADUAT LEVEL WRITING SO REREAD AND REFINE YOUR INTRODUCTION. USE SOPHISCATED VOCABULARY AND NOT EVERYDAY LANGUAGE. - You should include citations of your sources within the two page introduction using APA 6th edition style and in the reference section at the end of the project. The items, products, or artifacts (used interchangeably) -You will be creating 5 different products and you must use five different categories (genres) below (see table below for a choice of seven categories (genres)). Note that the items that you are creating are not items or artifacts you pick up, but rather are written and created by you to express your response or knowledge about the topic. - You are graded on your depth of knowledge displayed in the items that you create as well as the authenticity of the item. THIS IS A CREATIVE PROJECT SO IF YOU CREATE A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE, MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. Example: For example, if you are an elementary teacher you need to search the SOLs and find what topics you will have to teach in the content areas. For this illustration, we will say that you selected past presidents. You then narrow it to one president, Abraham Lincoln. You would then read and research your topic. Next, you will examine the seven group choice responses (such as print media, visual with words, etc.) and decide which 5 groups that you want to use. You would then create one item from five different groups (totaling five items (genres). For instance, you may elect to write an editorial column for a newspaper as if you were Abraham Lincoln. You would then research what topics he might have written about during his time as president, find an online site to help you create an authentic looking newspaper column, and then research the speech during that time period so that you are sure to write in the type of speech that was used during that time (not today's informal way of speaking). Create your product and you have one of the required artifacts for your project. Final Concluding Statement -A final concluding statement that ties the parts of your project together (minimum of one page). This is a reflection on what you learned and how you hope to use this information in your classroom. -A final page containing all the sources you consulted. Cited in APA 6th edition style. Be sure that you have consulted ten sources and more than just Internet sources. If you are unsure how to cite APA 6th edition style, you could use the online website which put your citations in APA style such as the online APA manual. Final Product NOTE: Your project should be turned in to the professor as a Microsoft Word Document with all of your artifacts scanned into ONE document (or cut and pasted). Note: These are items that you create. These are not items that you find on the internet or from another source. IT 230 Web Technology Project You are required to create a small web site. You have to choose the project idea and work in it as individual or with a group of maximum two students. The website must me NO less than 5 pages. At least two pages are dynamic. The website must built using one of the following techniques: * JavaScripts and Servlet * JSP * PHP And connect to database Write everything you did to build the web in a document Identical project will get ZERO for both projects (if the change in only colors and text, projects must be with different ideas or different implementation)
