Music
This is a copy of my research paper, I need a power point presentation of this. Including the playlist. A brief description of my project. Women, Sexuality and Country Music Most music genres present the women characters as a mere object. Women are portrayed as mere sexual objects, and with the images that are posted on different media platforms, it has turned out to be the norm. The problem arises when men are not presented similarly but rather respected. Treatment of women as sexual object is also evident in the country music through the video, lyrics and the images; it can be established that women are treated as a sexual object. This perception is not expected to change anytime soon. Research shows that most of the country music from the year 2010 to 2014 focus on the appearance of women (Rasmussen and Densley). Rasmussen and Densley affirm that in the recent past, country artists are less likely to portray women seeking to empower themselves or in traditional roles; instead, they are treated as objects of gratification. Ironically, the women country singers are at the forefront in this sexualization. Rather than being at the forefront in fighting for equal rights, through their lyrics and music videos they acknowledge that the men are superior. One of the country music artist in this category is Miranda Lambert. In one of her song, “Me and Your Cigarettes” she equates herself to a used cigarette. Other phrases like “It ain't love…” and “Light us up and then throw us down” are indications that she feels that the women are only meant to be used by men, and they do not deserve any respect. Another female country artist who has destroyed the image of women is Jessica Simpson. Her video for the song “These Boots Are for Walking,” she is dressed in provocative clothing while the men in her video are decently dressed. These video like other in the genre portrays the values and the image of women in the society (Wilson 290). She felt that she had to be sexy and entertain men. Other male country artists like Trace Atkins. In his song “Trace Atkins Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” he uses the phrase “It ain't right to hate her for working that moneymaker” and indication that he sees a woman’s body as money making objects. His video is not exceptional. Women are demoralized while men are exhausted and respected. However, there are those artists like Carrie Underwood who have taken up an active role in ensuring that they change the image of women. Country women artist like Carrie Underwood in most of her songs including, “Jesus Take the Wheel” she dresses decently even the other women in her video. In her way, she wants to ensure that women are respected and are not treated as the “weak sex.” Country music is not only a male-dominant genre but is has dramatically represented the women figure with less respect as compared to the male figure. From the music video, the lyrics and the images, it is evident that most artists in this genre perceive women as a mere sexual object. The don’t have much significance but are preferably used by men as they wish, and they are weaker and less respected. Unfortunately, it is the women artist in this genre, like Miranda Lambert and Jessica Simpson who have been at the forefront in destroying the image of women. Therefore, for women to be shown the same respect and treated equal to men, artist in this industry need to emulate the example of Carrie Underwood and present scenes that promote equality (Bennett and Peterson). ?
