Order Description
Mabel is an 11-year-old girl has entered your outpatient mental health clinic accompanied by her foster mother, Ms. Cherry, who is her 5th foster mother over the past year. Mabel was born in Guyana and moved to the United States when she was 7 years old to live with her maternal grandmother after her grandmother discovered that Mabel had experienced neglect in the form of inadequate supervision and excessive punishment by withholding food. Mabel was sexually assaulted by her mother’s live-in paramour for over two years. The abuse was confirmed by authorities. One year prior to today’s visit, Mabel had been in a car accident in which her grandmother perished. Immediately following the accident, she was trapped in the car with her grandmother’s body for several hours until she was extracted by the Jaws of Life and EMS. Mabel was physically unharmed. Ms. Cherry reports that Mabel is having trouble in school. Teachers call almost daily about her unruly behavior. She has explosive tantrums. Mabel fights other students and the slightest of provocation. For example, when a peer brushed up against her backpack by mistake, Mabel proceeded to push, shove, and punch the student peer. Mabel is mostly irritable and angry, but she has moments where she is pleasant and cooperative. Mabel experiences nightmares nearly every night. She reports that she sees an image of a man entering her room. She states that she sometimes sees the man outsider her bedroom window on the fire escape. She sleeps 3-4 hours a night. Ms. Cherry also states that Mabel also steals food from the refrigerator, even though she is free to ask for snacks and beverages. Ms. Cherry noticed Mabel hiding food under the bed, and has even discovered her burying food in coffee cans in the back yard. Neighbors have encountered Mabel on the streets asking strangers for money and food. Based on what you know from this case, answer the following questions
