• The project is worth 25 points. The in-class part of the test is worth 80 points, for a total possible grade of 105 on Test 4.
• Since extra credit is built into the project, extra credit homework will not be collected over unit 4.
• Integrals may be evaluated using the TI-83/84 or by using a table of integrals.
The Problem:
A service station plans to store gasoline in an underground cylindrical storage tank buried on its side. The axis of the cylinder is horizontal. The tank is 6 feet in diameter and 12 feet long. The density of the gasoline is 42 lb/ft3. 1 gallon is equivalent to 0.1337 ft3.
The station has hired your consulting firm to perform the following tasks:
Task 1: The station employees will measure the amount of gasoline remaining by inserting a stick to measure the depth of the gasoline above the lowest part of the tank.
You need to create a table showing the number of gallons of gasoline in the tank when the depth of the gasoline is 0 feet, 1 feet, 2 feet, 3 feet, 4 feet, 5 feet, and 6 feet.
Task 2: Determine the amount of work done in emptying a full tank by pumping all of the gasoline to a point 6 feet above the top of the tank.
