Public Administration
You are a research officer working for a US government department. One of your responsibilities is to monitor the UN system organization that your department funds. You have a new head of
department. You have been asked to brief him/her about the UN organization. Your new supervisor knows NOTHING about the organization. She/He will be visiting the organization soon with a view to
getting familiar with what the organization does, how it is run and to consider funding options. These could include keeping the funding the same, increasing or decreasing, or eliminating funding
altogether.
Write a memo providing a briefing for your supervisor to help her/him get an initial impression of the organization and also make recommendations about how to approach future levels of funding.
The Memo should be single spaced with double spacing between paragraphs; addressed to the professor, (800 words minimum length excluding bibliography; minimum of 6 sources):
The memo should include the following information:
· Dates of visit and purpose of visit
· Name of organization
· When founded and why
· What document/ law/regulation created the organization and what authority does it have, (such as only making recommendations/only providing information/enforcing implementation, etc.)
· Mission/Purpose
· Where it is located
· Current membership
· Who staffs it (general description not specific names) and how are they selected or appointed
· Who is the current chief executive, when appointed, and how long has she/he got left on his appointment – your supervisor will be having a one hour meeting with the Chief Executive, so you should
highlight some questions that she/he should ask. Do not ask questions that you should know already i.e. that can be easily found on the web page or from the research that you should have done to
brief your supervisor. So you need to think about things that only the head of the organization may know about.
· Sources of funding, size of budget, and size of your governments contributions (see link below). Whether the US contribution is voluntary or assessed and what the significance is.
· What influence the US has on the organization, particularly through voting
· Recent achievements, activities
· Recent failures, problems
· Future plans
· What reputation does it have about effectiveness?
