Rehabilitation of Offenders

Order Description You are required to submit ONE 2000 word artefact (+/-10%) Graham is a white man aged 64, who has been unemployed for 8 years, having been made redundant from his job in office administration. He is currently subject to a 12 month Community Order with a Supervision Requirement and 5 days Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR) (exploring his alcohol misuse) for the offence of Criminal Damage. Graham rents privately a small one bedroom flat with his female partner and both receive benefits. Graham’s offending is alcohol-related with his previous sentence being an offence of affray; this incident occurred when Graham brandished a knife against another person, a scuffle ensued and his partner reportedly was ‘accidentally’ cut by the knife. Graham received a twenty four month Suspended Sentence Order and had to attend the Building Better Relationships programme. He never commenced the programme as he breached his Order and custody was activated. Graham has no previousconvictions against his partner but it is known that neighbours have called out the police to their address on a number of occasions when the couple were arguing. Intelligence from the Community Safety Unit has identified a number of rather serious incidents of domestic violence but none have been brought forward as convictions. Both Graham and his partner stated in the court report that they are happy living together but Graham said that he has suffered from depression since losing his job. A good essay will discuss: 1.How you would set about assessing Graham’s criminogenic needs. 2.Gaps in your knowledge that you have identified. 3.How you would look to fill these gaps (by ‘reading around the subject’) in order to work constructively with Graham. 4.Graham’s diversity issues i.e. his background and current living situation and in what ways he is similar or different to you. 5.The rehabilitative techniques or interventions you might use to work with him, explaining why you chose them.
