Social Action and Multiculturalism
Order Description
Sometimes it can be difficult to assist a social work supervisee in developing advocacy skills. Hardina and Obel-Jorgensen (2009) present a model for supervision that suggests using activities that the supervisor can implement to develop competency in the following eight areas:
Self-awareness and cultural competency
Engagement and dialogue with constituents, key informants, and decision makers
Problem identification and assessment
Facilitating constituent self-determination and empowerment
Verbal and written communication
Working with constituents to weigh the ethical implications of tactics and strategies
Taking action
Evaluating organizing outcomes and processes (Hardina & Obel-Jorgensen, 2009, p. 91)
For this Discussion, review the Hardina and Obel-Jorgensen (2009) article.
Post by Day 3 an evaluation of the activities presented in Hardina and Obel-Jorgensen’s (2009) supervision model that apply to:
Self-awareness and cultural competency
Choose another area
In your evaluation, please include the following:
Identify a vulnerable population that is an area of interest for you.
Describe how you would implement the activities to develop these two areas of competency with a supervisee working with this population.
Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of these activities.
Discuss whether you believe this framework would be useful in developing these two competency areas? If so, why? If not, why not? For example, how would these activities develop a level of competency in cultural competence when working with the homeless?
Do you view this model as a useful framework in promoting social action with your chosen vulnerable population? If so, why? If not, why not?
