Health Science Informatics Course Project (Graded Assignment in Two Parts)
Each student will work on a on a project over the duration of the course. This topic will focus
on either a disease or a specific health informatics topic. In the past, topics have ranged from
HEART DISEASE and OBESITY (diseases) to THE USE OF INFORMATICS IN YOUR PROFESSION.
(informatics topic). Use these examples as guides only and select a topic which is both of
interest to you and can be related to the course. You will select a topic for your portfolio to be
approved by the coordinator of the course, Professor King.
There are two parts of this Assignment: Topic Identification and the Research Paper.
Each part will be submitted separately using the appropriate Turnitin Assignment
links on the Course Introduction page.
A. Topic Identification
Identify in approximately (+/- 10) 100 words the topic for your term project and why you have chosen it. Please keep the topic general enough so that you will locate WEB sites, journal articles and clinical systems for the subject. You may want to identify a disease (cancer, diabetes, etc) a general health topic (women’s health, nutrition, etc.) or an informatics related topic (such as clinical records in radiology or telemedicine in dental health) or more general topics (such as emerging technology in dental health or robotics in surgery, for example). Look beyond specific dental hygiene topics, if necessary.
Due Date: The Topic Identification must be submitted using the Topic
Identification Turnitin link no later than Midnight, Friday, October 2nd.
B. Research Paper
The paper should be (+/- 100 words) 3000 words in length and include six (6)
labeled sections:
1. Introduction
The Introduction will identify the topic of the paper and provide a reason for your
choice.
2. Background
The Background section provides a review of information you have gathered on
your topic, a resource which you will use to support subsequent sections of the
paper. The Background will include:
A literature review using Medline, CINAHL or one of the other journal indexing
databases subscribed to by the College (available on the Library.s homepage:
https://my.mcphs.edu/library/resources/edatabases
This review will include at least five (5) articles related to your topic. A paragraph within this Background section will summarize the totality of information discovered in these
articles.
Information gathered from at least five (5) consumer WEB sites related to project
topic. When discussing these sites, identify in a paragraph within this Background
section how the information relates to your project and the target audience
(whether professionals or consumers).
3. Discussion
The Discussion section is where you will present your own ideas, drawing from
the information included in the background plus your own experience. In addition
to your own experience information, the Discussion section should
Describe a clinical information system (either used for direct patient care or in
support of it) which applies to the paper topic. This description should include
what the system is, how it is used and what impact it has on your topic. WEB links
(with in-content references) should be identified if there are any available
systems of this type in operation.
Describe how mobile technology or distance learning/telemedicine would be used in
the provision of healthcare specifically related to the paper topic. Actual examples may be used
or a totally hypothetical scenario. Again, provide in-content references for any Web sites used.
4. Conclusions
The Conclusions section is where you identify what you have .concluded. and
.decided. regarding the ideas and issues included in the Discussion area of the
paper. These conclusions should be listed in numerical order with a brief
description of ”what” and “why” you made each decision. One of the conclusions
must be how your informatics project relates to your specific profession (Radiology, Dental Hygiene or other health sciences, etc.).
5. Summary
The Summary is a one or two paragraph overview of what was included in the
paper. It should include summarized information from each of the previous
sections. In addition, it should provide a statement identifying what your next
steps (if any) will be.
6. Bibliography
The Bibliography will be on a separate page at the end of the paper and will list all
articles used in the literature review, Web sites referenced in the Background and
Discussion sections should also be included, along with any other published
documents used in the creation of this paper. All citations will be formatted either
APA, AMA or other approved style.
Due Date: The Research Paper is due for submission using the Research Paper
Turnitin link no later than Midnight, Monday, November 30th.
