You are required to belong to a group of 4 students for this project. These teams
should be formed in the first two weeks of class. The team is expected to work
together and each member is expected to make a significant contribution to the
project. Each team can pick a project topic in consultation with the instructor and
carry out independent research using library resources. A research paper is a scientific
paper that addresses a specific topic (within the domain of the course) in some depth
and with scientific rigor. Below, you will find some general guidelines on specific
aspects that should help you writing such a paper.
Finding a topic. The general topic of the paper must be within the domain of
compensation and benefits management. The textbook chapters provide a good
overview of the specific topics within that domain. However, the topic of the paper
should be considerably more specific than the content of the textbook chapters.
Evaluation. Your paper is marked on the following criteria: quality of content (choice
of topic and sources, whether the review demonstrates understanding and the ability
to link different sources and draw inferences), style (clarity of presentation, adherence
to guidelines as outlined above), and thoughtfulness (independence and stringency of
thoughts expressed, in particular, in the discussion of implications).
???? The research paper should be type written, 1.5 line-spaced, using 12-point size
font times new roman, and should not exceed 15 pages (excluding cover page,
and references).
???? The cover page should provide the title of the research paper, the complete
student name, student ID number, and course code.
???? The research paper should contain the following sections: (1) Abstract; (2)
Literature Review; (3) Conclusion; (7) References.
???? APA style must be followed.
???? All reports must have a University cover sheet with all of the appropriate
details completed, including names and course details. Cover sheets should be
signed by each member, which usually requires advance planning.
???? Reports must be stapled in the top left-hand corner, or bound (where
appropriate).

This project is an important requirement in this course and is worth 40% of the
total grade, as follows:
???? Project Report: 30%
???? Presentation: 10%
Final report due: 8th December, 2015
Presentation: 8st December, 2015
Each team will present its research findings to the class.
???? Presentations shall be 30 minutes long.
???? Presentations will be judged by both the instructor and your peers on: clarity (in
stating the purpose, methods, and outcomes, etc.), quality of materials used (easy
to follow), and style of presentation (engaging vs. boring), etc.
???? There will be a 5-minute question and answer session following each main
presentation. This part will also be graded.
TIPS ON MAKING AN EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION
???? Understand your material perfectly. Read and re-read the project report.
???? Plan your presentation to suit:
???? The time allocated
???? The audience
???? Do not present everything you know or have. There is not enough time for it.
Layout everything on paper and ask: What does the audience need to know? What
can I cut?
???? Use slides and handouts to illustrate your presentation. These tools increase clarity
and help get more material across within a fixed amount of time.
???? Slides should be simple and clear. Text must be large enough to be seen from the
back row. One rule of thumb is that each slide should have no more than 5-7 lines
and each line should not have more than 5-7 words.
???? Use charts, graphs where appropriate. A picture can be worth a thousand words.
???? Focus on the following key points:
???? Objective – Define the problem/issue.
???? Provide a brief review of previous studies (or theories) of the problem/issue
gleaned from the literature.
4
???? Describe the methods that were used to research the problem.
???? Discuss the main findings and recommendations.
???? Discuss the implications of your work for practice and theory.
???? Save some materials for the question-and-answer session if you cannot present
everything you would like to. If it is relevant, chances are that someone will raise
it as an issue.
