Topic: principles of classical conditioning
Order Description
Written assignment I: Classical Conditioning
Due Wednesday, September 16
This assignment is designed to provide you with an opportunity to explore the principles of classical
conditioning and to apply what we are learning in chapter 4. I hope you see firsthand how powerful
classical conditioning can be in our world. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Steps for success:
1. Begin by reviewing chapter 4 in your textbook, as well as our discussions on classical
conditioning and the activities provided for you.
2. Carefully read through the instructions listed below and mentally walk through the steps.
3. Decide on a partner for this activity – may be a classmate, roommate, or family member. You
are to choose someone who can safely perform aerobic activities without injury, specifically
jumping jacks.
4. Gather all necessary materials (paper, pencil, stopwatch).
5. Carefully and thoughtfully collect your data.
6. Examine your data and think about what you just observed.
Procedure:
**Please do not engage with cell phones, televisions, radios, or other distractions during this process.
**Please do not carry on a conversation while collecting your data.
**You will need a partner for this activity. You or your partner must be able to safely perform aerobic
activities, specifically jumping jacks. If there is any risk associated with you or your partner performing this
activity, do not engage in this activity. Please contact me directly.
To begin, the participant is to sit and relax for two minutes (the experimenter must use a stopwatch!).
Using the stop watch, the experimenter will record time for 10 seconds and ask the participant to count
number of heart beats using either wrist or neck during the 10 second period. Write down the pulse.
The experimenter will then gently tap the top of the participant’s head seven consecutive times.
Immediately after the seven taps, the participant will stand up and complete 15 jumping jacks (make
sure you count carefully!). Using the stop watch, the experimenter will record time for 10 seconds and
ask the participant to count number of heart beats using either wrist or neck during the 10 second
period. Write down the pulse.
This is a shortened version of your procedure:
Sit rest for 2 min (participant)
Time 10 second period and take pulse
Gently tap head 7 times (experimenter)
Immediately, stand up and complete 15 jumping jacks (participant)
Take pulse (experimenter)
Repeat this procedure five total times, recording all data points (1 data point = 1 pulse reading).
**Now, it is the sixth time that the participant has relaxed quietly for 2 minutes. At the end of the 2 minute period, the experimenter is to gently tap on the participant’s head seven times. Immediately take the participant’s pulse – NO exercising this time.
What happened to the participant’s pulse?
Ask the participant how he/she feels immediately after feeling the seven taps.
What to include in your submission:
Title page (title of your document, first and last name, and date of submission)
Manuscript
a. Introductory paragraph: opening statement/objective of your study
b. Clearly identify and label the principle components in the conditioning process (refer your reader to your diagram in the appendix)
c. Describe your methodology – be sure to include all steps in the process and carefully detail exactly what you did.
d. Discuss your findings (explain your data as you would to another student) and the implications/applications of the data you gathered (e.g. How can you use what you have learned? What did you observe? Why do you think this happened? What may have gone wrong during data collection – what would you do differently next time?)
Reference page
a. Textbook (make sure to properly cite following APA formatting guidelines)
*If a source is listed on your reference page, it MUST be properly cited within the text of your paper. If you cite someone in your paper, the source MUST be listed on your reference page.
**Please remember that your assignment is to follow all APA formatting guidelines and needs to be well-written (i.e. complete sentences, well developed paragraphs, no misspellings, no grammatical errors, etc.) and well-developed. Take a few minutes to go back to your course syllabus and review the requirements of your written assignments.
All assignments are to be well organized, properly formatted, and without error. Please proofread your document three times prior to submission! Your paper should not contain grammatical errors, sloppy writing, and/or spelling errors. Documents are to be written using Times New Roman 12-pt font, black font color, and are to be double-spaced. Your title page should include: the title of your document, your first and last name, and the date of submission. Plan ahead and work ahead of schedule.
Your assignment is due before 11:59 pm EST on Wednesday, Sept 16.
