The Literature Review
To provide a written overview, classification, and evaluation of your research by organizing the most significant sources related to your topic.
A literature review is an attempt to understand what experts have said about a given topic. For the purpose of this course, it will be an evaluation of the research you did for the annotated bibliography. You will organize your sources into appropriate groups, identify the most important sources, and articulate how they might be useful to develop your argument. The literature review should be approximately 5 pages. More details about the assignment will be given in lecture.
Instructions:
1. See handout from UNA Center for Writing Excellence and sample from Ithaca College Library.
2. Difference from an annotated bibliography (week 2) and research proposal (week 4).
3. Approximately 5 pages double-spaced in MLA or APA format (see WBH XI-XII).
4. Submit to Smart Thinking for feedback by day 3-5.
Suggested outline:
1. Introduction:
• your research topic
• the kinds of sources you’ve found
• outline of the rest of the lit. review
2. Body Paragraphs: (see WBH III)
• topic sentences organized by outline of research project
• introduce, summarize, and evaluate sources (“connect the dots”)
3. Conclusion:
• summarize what you learned from sources
• describe research plan moving forward
