Topic: Transportation & Health "air quality exposure"
Order Description
Transportation & Health
Unsafe conditions We have discussed the broad set of ways that the transportation system generates negative externalities that have
consequences for our health

namely traffic safety, air quality exposure, disease
propagation and stress. The state of the knowledge of the health impacts for each of these specific negative externalities varies considerably. Traffic safety, for example, has a very long and substantial associated literature. Yet stress and disease propagation are less developed
.
Similarly, the ways that these health issues are addressed in practice vary in their development.
Based on class discussions and readings .please write a memo that develops the unsafe condition of air quality exposure along the following
lines:

Drawing on the readings and other literature,
identify some of the
emerging issues in this
area
(i.e. what is new and at the leading edge, rather
than
established considerations).
Consult
literature beyond what we have
read in class.

What changes to practice are needed to make significant reductions to the exposure to this
negative externality or mitigate the impacts of exposure?

What barriers exist to accomplishing these changes (more research, political will, lack of public
recogn
ition or support, etc)?

Speculate, based upon the evidence in the literature, the state of this issue in 10 years. How
might
one

s responses
to these issues change if writing
this issue in a decade? Why?
