Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement. My grandfather was a North Korean who escaped to South Korea during the war. Whenever he talked about his life in North Korea, I imagined how my life would differ if he didn’t cross over the border so that I had to live in North Korea. All the things that I have now including food, transportation. Two different countries, once a same country, with different ideology greatly change their economic status. That was the first time I was getting interested in economics. My interest in economics developed throughout the time I live in the US. My monthly allowance was closely related to the foreign currency. Because while I had same amount of Korean currency every month, when I exchange it to US currency, its value fluctuated. When the Korean currency is strong, I can buy more with the same amount of Korean currency, and when the Korean currency was weak I had less US currency after the exchange. While I figure out what can help me to buy more with the same amount of money, I learned that one country’s policy change, economic boom or crisis can greatly affect my budget. Because money’s relative value was affecting me in my daily life, my desire to learn more about principles of economics grew in order to efficiently manage my budget and maximize the money. While my interest in economics and majoring it was getting bigger, I had a chance to practice debating with other teams in phi beta lambda business club. We were finding the best solution for ‘how to prevent or retrieve US companies who are going offshore for tax benefit.’ While I was participating in the debate, I could see various solutions presented by each teams, and at the same time, I recognized the difference between other teams’ solution and me. Their solutions were all short-term solutions by manipulating tax rate for an immediate result while my solution was a slow but long-term solution by informing citizens about what is happening and how significant it is so that the society member can prevent companies from being against the moral rule. During the debate, I could see the complex in economics and its relationship with society; and I realized that I studying economics and providing accurate data and analysis can help government to have a better decision for the society.
