Topic: Understanding Results

Order Description In Bae, Mark, and Fried's article, "Impact of Nursing Unit Turnover on Patient Outcomes in Hospitals." Bae, Mark, and Fried's 2010 article, "Impact of Nursing Unit Turnover on Patient Outcomes in Hospitals," from Journal of Nursing Scholarship, volume 42, issue 1, pages 40–49. to understand how a critical appraisal of scientific evidence contributes to the application of accurate and relevant practice decisions to individuals and populations. This unit also provides you with opportunities to analyze the challenges that arise when nurses make decisions based on assumption rather than on scientific evidence and to examine how inferential statistics and qualitative analyses are commonly used in nursing practice to determine effective outcomes. INTRODUCTION There is no doubt that health care has become a data-driven system with heavy emphasis on evidence-based practice grounded in interpretation of scientific data mined from research and scientific reviews of literature, yet the areas that learners often say they skip over when critiquing and evaluating scientific research are the statistical and data analysis sections of a research article! While one does not have to be an expert in research design and methods to serve the DNP role as expected, there is a clear and compelling need for the DNP learner to be able to evaluate and apply research in order to infer findings to individuals and populations. This requires the ability to interpret data, to evaluate whether the research design matches the research question, and to determine whether the statistical tests of analysis calculated in a research study were appropriate and scientifically rigorous. OBJECTIVES To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to: Understand a variety of statistical measures. Understand the difference between statistical and anecdotal analyses. Discuss how this process differs from making an anecdotal statement about a nursing practice: Examine the statistical tests of analysis, and describe whether these fit with the specific research design and research question. Discuss your interpretation of the inferential statistical findings and their implications for decisions as well as for solving the research problem or issue. Required Readings Use your Heavey text to read the following: Heavey, E. (2015). Statistics for nursing: A practical approach (2nd ed.). Burlington, MA: Jones and Bartlett. Chapter 1, "Introduction to Statistics and Levels of Measurement," pages 1–11. Chapter 3, "Descriptive Statistics, Probability, and Measures of Central Tendency," pages 31–47. Chapter 6, "Generating the Research Idea," pages 79–91. Chapter 8, "Chi-Square," pages 107–121. Chapter 9, "Student t-Test," pages 123–142. Optional Readings From the Internet: Descriptive Statistics. These tutorials from the Khan Academy will provide you with a review of the foundations of statistics and facilitate greater understanding of the evidence you will review throughout the DNP program and for the final DNP project.
