The influence of Internet sex education on adolescent’s views on abstinence and slut shaming
Introduction
The research examines the influence of the internet on sex education on adolescent views on abstinence and slut shaming. The technological advancements have led to adolescent accessing the internet in a both convenient and informative way. They can be able to access the internet on all matters especially on the sex education that affects them directly during their prime adolescence age (Ševc?íková, et.al. 2012). Additionally, research has shown that adolescent girls might react more negatively to online sexual content than boys (Ševc?íková, et.al.2012).The adolescent stage is a period of development that involves self-discovery on matters of sex, exploration and risk taking.Adolescents, therefore, use the previous experiences to create sexual scripts as a guide for future behaviours (Simon & Daneback 2013). However, parents, on the other hand, have adopted comprehensive programs that ensure that adolescents learn more about sexual education methods of abstinence such as the usage of condoms and other contraception (Turnbull & Van 2010).
Recently, there are various movements and organizations that advocate for sexual abstinence before marriage. These organizations mobilise campaigns through various media forms such as the internet. For instance, the abstinence movement in the USA has organised various sensation programs on sex before marriages and provide advisory information concerning sexual matters and purity (Williams 2011). Moreover, the current generation stands in a better position to make use of the internet for the personal, spiritual and sexual nourishment. The use of the internet is a strong communication media for which matters relating to sexual education can be obtained. However, the internet has exposed the youths to malignant sexual behaviours due to the various addictions to explicit sexual material contents (Fraser& Dutta 2010, Mitchell, Finkelhor & Wolak 2003).Additionally, recent research has shown that the internet is a sexual medium that provide a quicker access to sexually explicit materials more than any other medium (Peter & Valkenburg2006, Lo & Wei2005). Furthermore, an internet survey conduct on the usage of internet by the adolescents in Australia showed that a significant number used the internet to gain access to explicit sexual materials and other inappropriate behaviours (Fleming, et.al.2006, Tynes 2007).
The previous research has been conducted on the influence of the internet on sexual matters on the adolescent. However, only a few literature has explored on how the internet has shaped the adolescent's decisions and views pertaining sexual abstinence and slut shaming. Therefore, the main objective of my research is to focus on the main differences of sexual education that adolescent receives from the various stakeholders such as parents, teachers and social media. The various research techniques employed will involve a descriptive analysis of sexual education and identifying the various modes of dissemination of sexual information on the social media. The theoretical framework will involve the sociological deviant behaviour, heterosexual theories on adolescents and as well as adolescence romantic relations and sexual behaviour theory. The research will also make use of both primary and secondary sources.
